The death of Protocol Officer Naren Dhar (38) from unknown causes at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong has sparked concern and discussion in diplomatic circles.
Police said, Naren Dhar’s body was recovered and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy. So far the exact cause of his death has not been officially announced. Police have started investigating the incident.
Naren Dhar was serving as Protocol Officer of Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong. Protocol Officer’s responsibilities include coordinating visits of foreign officials and delegates, managing VIP movement, arranging government meetings and maintaining liaison with local administration. Officers working in such positions are often exposed to sensitive administrative and diplomatic information.
Security has been beefed up around the Indian Assistant High Commission following the incident. Diplomatic sources say the matter remains highly sensitive until the cause of death is ascertained.
Allegations of intelligence activities against protocol, political and security-related officials in the international diplomatic arena have surfaced from time to time. Indian diplomats have also faced such allegations in the past in various countries. However, it has not yet been officially confirmed whether these issues have any connection with Naren Dhar’s death.
The Indian High Commission has not yet made any official statement on the matter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh is also said to be monitoring the incident. The actual cause of death is expected to be known after the release of the police investigation report and autopsy results. Currently, the incident has become the subject of extensive discussion in diplomatic circles.
