An allegation has been received that the attack on Babul Akhter, leader of BNP No. 1 DIHI Union of Sharsha Upazila of Jessore, took place on the morning of Eid. Babul Akter, who was injured in the incident, was treated at the hospital. Besides filing a written complaint at Sharsha police station, he has also complained to the district BNP.
Babul Akhtar is a member of Dihi Union BNP and former organizing secretary of Ward No. 8 Youth Dal. He complained and said that he recently made an announcement on the social media Facebook expressing his interest in being nominated for the post of chairman in the upcoming Union Parishad elections. At the same time, on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Azha, some banners and signboards were placed to congratulate the Union residents. On these panels and signboards, pictures of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, senior leader of BNP, former Minister Tariqul Islam and current Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit were attached.
He said that after the Eid-ul-Azhar prayer on May 28, he conducted mass communication activities at Pakshia Bazar, the heart of the union. Later, on his way home at around 11:30 am, General Secretary of Union BNP Abdul Jabbar, his son Rakib Hossain and others ambushed him. He alleged that the assailants left him on the spot after seriously injuring him.
Locals rescued him and admitted him to Jessore 250 Bed General Hospital. Currently he is receiving treatment at home on the advice of the doctor.
Babul Akhtar claimed that Abdul Jabbar had been publicly announcing earlier that he would be “looked at” as he was a candidate for the post of chairman. He thinks that this attack was carried out on him in that sequence.
He also alleged that his banners and signboards installed at various places of the union were removed and vandalized at several places. Apart from tarnishing the image of the party, his political activities have been hampered.
Babul Akhtar claimed that the incident was carried out for the purpose of political revenge and intimidation and said that currently he and his family are suffering from extreme insecurity.
In this regard, the officer in charge of Sharsha police station Maruf Hossain said, “We have received a written complaint. The matter is being investigated.”
