The Election Commission (EC) has published the gazette announcing that Nusrat Tabassum, the nominee of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami and the joint convener of the NCP, has been elected to the reserved women’s seat in the Thirteenth Parliament.
Tuesday (May 5) director of public relations branch of EC. Ruhul Amin Mallick confirmed this. He said, “EC published the gazette yesterday on Monday night.”
In this regard, the returning officer of the reserved women’s seat and the joint secretary of the EC said. Moin Uddin Khan told reporters, “Nusrat Tabassum filed her nomination for the election on the reserved women’s seat. We declared her unopposed yesterday. The gazette has been published in her name.”
Notably, another NCP candidate Monira Sharmin’s nomination was canceled by the EC as three years had not passed since she resigned from government service. After that, Nusrat Tabassum hastily submitted the nomination form on April 21 at 4:19 PM, the deadline for submission of nomination papers. However, it was not accepted by the returning officer.
Then Nusrat approached the court. The court directed the Election Commission to accept his nomination papers and take further action as per law. After that, the organization accepted Nusrat Tabassum’s nomination paper and declared it valid.
In the meantime, to get back the candidature, Monira Sharmin wrote a writ in the court and wrote to the Election Commission that Nusrat’s gazette should not be published until the court hearing is over. However, a bench of the High Court has declared inadmissibility to hear the writ petition filed yesterday challenging the validity of the decision to cancel the candidature of Monira Sharmin.
In this regard, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machoud said yesterday, “We have not received any information from the court till now (afternoon). Monira Sharmin’s letter is of no use. We will wait until today evening. If no information about her comes in the meantime, we will publish the gazette in the name of Nusrat Tabassum.”
