After losing the election in India’s West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee did not leave the post of Chief Minister and finally the Governor RN Ravi dissolved the Legislative Assembly. This marked the official end of Trinamool rule in the state.
The governor said in a statement on Thursday (May 7), ‘In exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (b) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I dissolve the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, 2026.’
The Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee was miserably defeated by the BJP in the recently concluded assembly elections.
However, Mamata announced that she would not leave the post of Chief Minister, alleging irregularities in the election. He was adamant about a legal battle or a demand for a review of the results over allegations of rigging.
However, according to the Constitution of India, the old cabinet automatically dissolves after the five-year term of the Assembly expires. And so, despite not accepting the defeat, Mamata’s rule ended with constitutional obligations.
The BJP is alleging that Mamata Banerjee has defied constitutional norms by not accepting defeat and resigning. The governor’s statement came in such a situation. This time he will call BJP as the single majority party to form the government.
