The student leader of Dhaka University, Abdullah Al Mamun, has finally been granted bail in the anti-terrorism law case filed over the incident of playing the historic March 7 speech on loudspeakers in the Shahbagh area of the capital Dhaka. He was released after legal proceedings after the High Court granted him interim bail on Thursday.

On the night of March 7, Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Imi, the former VP of Shamsunnahar Hall, and Abdullah Al Mamun, the student leader of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, tied a microphone to a rickshaw at the capital’s Chankharpool and Shahbag intersection and gave a program to play the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. While playing the speech, the leaders and activists of a student organization of Dhaka University attacked them and prevented them from carrying out the program. At one point, Imi and Mamun were handed over to Shahbagh police station along with a rickshaw.

The day after the incident on March 8, Shahbag police station filed a case against three people including Imi, Mamun and Asif Ahmed Saikat under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The case was accused of obstructing the work of the police and trying to facilitate the activities of a banned organization.

The accused appealed to the High Court after the direction of the High Court and the bail was denied by the lower court. On April 30, a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted them interim bail.

He was released from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur today after completing the formalities of verification of bail documents and bail bonds. Earlier Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Imi got bail in the same case.

The arrest of Mamun and Imi sparked a lot of discussion in the social media and political arena. In a statement, 145 prominent citizens of the country termed the arrest as harassment and demanded their unconditional release.
