State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid reiterated Bangladesh’s firm commitment to democratic governance, sustainable development, peace and multilateral cooperation. On Thursday (May 14) in New York, in a meeting with Khaled Khyari, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Political, Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping Operations for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Region, he highlighted Bangladesh’s position and commitment on these issues.
At the meeting, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs highlighted the priorities of the newly elected government of Bangladesh to restore public confidence, increase the capacity and acceptability of institutions, ensure transparency and accountability, improve the quality of public services and mention the government’s commitment to uphold human rights and the rule of law.
Shama Obaid pointed out that the government is implementing various initiatives including the ‘Family Card’ and ‘Farmers Card’ programs to deal with the socio-economic risks and weaknesses of the concerned population.
He highlighted the important role of Bangladesh in UN peacekeeping operations and emphasized on keeping the peacekeeping mandate intact despite the ongoing liquidity crisis and mentioned the need to increase the participation of women and youth in post-conflict situations.
Regarding the Rohingya crisis, he said, the repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar is the only effective long-term solution to this crisis. He sought the continued cooperation and support of the international community until their return to their home countries is assured.
Assistant Secretary-General Khyari praised Bangladesh’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and Bangladesh’s role in increasing women’s participation in peace and security initiatives.
