The police arrested SK Nahid (26), an active member of Chhatra League, in a joint operation in Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon. However, after his arrest, his pregnant wife made serious allegations that he was subjected to “police torture” in police custody. He was sent to jail by the court on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier on Monday evening, he was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Raninagar and Atrai police stations in the Raninagar railway station area. The arrested SK Nahid is the son of SK Habibur Rahman of Purba Baluvra village in Upazila and has been working in a private company in Dhaka for a long time.

According to family sources, Nahid came to the village home after receiving news of his wife’s illness. Nahid’s younger brother Maruf said that on Monday afternoon, when he came out of the house for family essential shopping and reached the Raninagar railway station area, the police arrested him and took him to the police station. Later the family members came to know that he was arrested in a case filed at the neighboring Atrai police station.

Nahid’s wife Anika Akhtar accused her husband of police torture and said that Nahid’s body was not injured during the arrest yesterday. When I went to the police station this morning, I saw blood on Nahid’s hands, nose and throat. How did this blood come if not beaten? I am pregnant and sick. He came to meet me. Despite many requests, the police did not release him.

The police administration completely denied this allegation of torture. Raninagar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Zakaria Mandal confirmed the truth of the incident and said that Nahid was handed over to Atrai police station on Tuesday afternoon after his arrest.

He claimed that he was not beaten or tortured in any way. There are CCTV cameras inside and outside the police station and toilets everywhere. In addition, the accused are asked in court whether any injury or torture has been done. So such allegations are not correct.

On the other hand, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Atrai Police Station Obaidul Rahman said that there is a case against SK Nahid under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Atrai Police Station. On the basis of that case, he was arrested and sent to jail through the court this afternoon.
