The local BNP leader has blocked the road and demonstrated with people from all walks of life in protest against the excessive and irregular power supply in Sreepur of Gazipur.
This intense protest program was celebrated yesterday in Burmi area of the upazila. The protestors complained that the public life has been completely disrupted due to hours of load-shedding in the area in intense heat. Especially children, old and sick people are at extreme health risk in this unbearable heat.
Agitators said that it has become impossible for those who do not have alternative systems like IPS or AC in their houses to stay at home. At the same time, local businesses and students’ studies are being disrupted.
The former president of Sripur Upazila BNP Shahjahan Fakir led the protest march. He gave a stern ultimatum to the officials of the local regional electricity office, strongly criticizing the gross mismanagement of the power department.
While addressing the gathering, Shahjahan Fakir said that the electricity situation in Sreepur and Burmi areas should be normalized within the next three days. If there is no permanent solution to this problem within three days, we will boycott the entire electricity bill along with people from all walks of life. Electricity office will not be billed till the situation is normal.
The agitating common people raised various slogans in support of this ultimatum of the BNP leader and demanded to ensure uninterrupted electricity connection. Local traffic was disrupted for some time due to the road blockade, but later the situation was brought under control with the assurance of the authorities. However, the next step depends on the power situation after the three-day ultimatum, said local residents.
