National Citizen Party (NCP) member secretary Akhtar Hossain claimed that the government is denying the verdict of the people. He said that despite the clear opinion of the people in the referendum, the government is denying that verdict. It was their duty to form the Constitutional Reform Council, but they did not do it.’
He made this claim at a press conference titled ‘National Convention on Fuel, Economy, Human Rights, Reforms and Referendum’ at the NCP’s temporary central office Banglamotor on Saturday (May 2) afternoon.
Akhtar Hossain said, “After the 13th National Assembly elections, a consensus was formed among the political parties as about 70 percent of the people voted in favor of the referendum. Accordingly, there was an expectation to implement reforms quickly. But we saw that after the formation of the government, the BNP withdrew from that promise. Instead of implementing the verdict of the referendum, it was sometimes termed as a ‘document of fraud’, sometimes as ‘unconstitutional’.”
This member secretary of NCP said, ‘To bring changes in the basic structure of the constitution, a higher structure institution is needed. From that need came the idea of Constitution Reform Council, which was not rejected by any party before.’
