India’s former railway minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as the High Commissioner to Bangladesh by the Indian government. The Ministry of External Affairs of India made this announcement on Monday (April 27). The Indian government has also said that he will join Dhaka soon.

Incidentally, Prannoy Verma, the present high commissioner of India posted in Dhaka, is being sent as ambassador to Brussels.

75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is a former Railway Minister of the Union Government of India. He served as a Trinamool Congress member in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. In 2012, he came under fire from the party leadership for proposing hike in passenger fare while presenting the railway budget and was forced to resign. He has also served as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. Dinesh Trivedi was a member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He has served as a member of the Lok Sabha from West Bengal and a member of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. He resigned from the Trinamool Congress in February 2021 and joined the BJP the following month.

India has been sending ambassadors to neighboring countries through professional diplomats for a long time. For the first time in more than three decades, the Indian government has made a political appointment in a neighboring country.
