Former legal adviser. A sudden and unscheduled meeting between Asif Nazrul’s wife Sheila Ahmed and Prime Minister’s ICT advisor Rehana has created a stir in the political and diplomatic arena. This meeting was held at the ICT tower of Agargaon on Tuesday (May 5) at noon.
The meeting was reportedly not part of any pre-planned programme. According to eyewitnesses and related sources, Sheila Ahmed introduced herself as a ‘Protocol Officer’ of the US Embassy and entered the ICT Tower and arranged a meeting with the adviser.
It is said that an American citizen and an official of the US Embassy in Bangladesh were also present with Sheila Ahmed. Eyewitnesses claim that during the meeting, Sheila Ahmed repeatedly wanted to make sure whether any journalist was present there or not. This issue of hiding has given rise to many questions in the public mind. The matter came to light only after journalist Jawad Nirjhar leaked a video of the meeting on social media and quickly went viral.
A former legal adviser’s wife went straight to the ICT tower for such an ‘unexpected’ meeting with a high-ranking official that sparked a lot of rumours. Political analysts are raising questions, but is Sheela Ahmed doing any special diplomacy to improve relations with the United States with the current government? Why he impersonated the US embassy and went directly to meet the ICT adviser, is not clear.
So far no official explanation has been provided by the ICT Adviser’s office or Sheila Ahmed regarding this meeting. Even the US Embassy did not disclose the identity of Sheela Ahmed or the presence of their officials in this meeting.
In the current political situation, this ‘secret’ discussion of the US Embassy officials with the highest levels of the government is an indication of a new equation behind the scenes or not.
