The imam of a mosque has been arrested by the police on charges of raping a seven-year-old child in Kuliarchar, Kishoreganj. The incident took place at Paschim Tarakandi Jame Masjid of Ramdi Union of the upazila on Sunday (May 24) afternoon. The detained Imam Hafez Mahbub alias Mahbullah (23) is the son of deceased Shahed Ali Akand of Khalishapur-Banpara village of Purbadhala Upazila of Netrokona.
According to police and local sources, the arrested imam finished studying Hafizi in a madrasa at the local Agarpur bus stand. For the past one month, he has been serving as an imam at West Tarakandi Jame Masjid in Ramadi Union of Kuliarchar Upazila. The child victim is disabled. He raped the imam when he took lunch today. When the child came out and reported the matter, the local people arrested the accused and informed the police. On receiving the information, the police went to the spot and arrested him and took him to the police station. When this news spread, a large number of people gathered at the spot and protested in front of the police. They want a fair trial.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kuliarchar police station Kazi Arif said, “The police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the rape of a child in the mosque. Later the accused was arrested and brought to the police station. The incident is being investigated very seriously. Also, the process of the case is going on in this incident.’
