A legal notice has been sent challenging the report published by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (OHCHR) on the July movement, claiming it to be ‘politically motivated and one-sided’. UK’s famous legal consultancy firm ‘Dotty Street Chambers’ has sent this notice.
This legal notice has been sent on behalf of former Prime Minister and Awami League President Jannetri Sheikh Hasina by Mr. Steven Powell KC, a renowned lawyer of Doty Street Chambers. Former officer of National Security Intelligence Agency (NSI) Aminul Haque Palash has confirmed the truth of this information.
The legal notice sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, described the death toll in the previous report by the Human Rights Commission as ‘disproportionate and exaggerated’. The notice calls upon the High Commissioner to amend the report as well as issue a public statement in this regard.
Notably, Mr. Steven Powell KC, the lawyer handling this notice on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is a well-known figure in the international legal arena. He has handled several high-profile and famous cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC). In addition to his legal profession, he is also serving as a part-time district judge in the United Kingdom and a part-time teacher at the world-renowned Cambridge University.
The legal notice claims that the UN Human Rights Commission has presented a one-sided and objective picture in its report, which is politically motivated, without verifying the actual facts and data at the field level. In this notice, it is urged to remove this inconsistency as soon as possible and present the correct information to the world.
