The Jamaat-led opposition alliance is forming a ‘Shadow Cabinet’ or ‘Shadow Government’ to ensure accountability in parliamentary democracy and show the right direction to the BNP-led government. The formation of this shadow government is almost at its final stage and its activities are said to have already started informally.

The official announcement of this shadow government may come at the end of the first budget session of the current government starting from June 7. The top two leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami’s policy-making level in parliament and outside parliament have confirmed this information.

Party leaders said that this shadow government is being formed with members of parliament (MP) of the opposition alliance. For this purpose, a training program has been organized for party MPs on June 5 and 6. Although this program is mainly organized around the budget session, the outline and guidelines of the shadow government will be finalized there. MPs’ views will be taken on how this government will work and who is interested in which ministry. The MPs will be given specific responsibilities for the respective ministries by the policy makers of the party and if necessary, some may be given the responsibility of multiple ministries.

Originally modeled after Westminster (Britain) style parliamentary democracy, the shadow government is an alternative organizational structure, where each government ministry is headed by a designated leader of the opposition. Although this idea is new in the politics of Bangladesh, after the thirteenth national parliament election, its preparation has gained importance on the part of the main opposition party and other political parties.
