A terrible picture of violence against women and children has come to light in the country. In 2025, 1 thousand 100 women and children have come to Dhaka Medical College (DMH) Hospital for medical and forensic examination. Professor Kazi Golam Mokhlesur Rahman, head of the Forensic Medicine Department of DMK Hospital, revealed these alarming statistics in a round table meeting on child and women protection organized in the capital.
Experts expressed deep anger and concern at the meeting, saying this figure of 1,100 was only a hospital record. Many rape cases in the country remain hidden due to social shame, threats and legal complications. As a result, the actual number of infected across the country is several times more. A large proportion of the victims are children, indicating the weakness of the country’s overall social security and legal system.
Women and child rights activists have demanded urgent steps to prevent this violence at the social and state levels. This includes immediate formation of a strong ‘National Child Protection Task Force’ to prevent child abuse. Special tribunals or speedy courts must be strengthened to give exemplary punishment to criminals at the earliest. The administration should adopt a zero tolerance policy to promote family moral education and eradicate drugs, one of the main catalysts of crime.
Strengthening of one-stop crisis centers in government hospitals to ensure speedy treatment and legal fight for women and children victims of violence.
