Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman have already completed the voter registration process. The Election Commission (EC) will meet tomorrow, Sunday, to approve the inclusion of their names in the voter list.
On Saturday (December 27), EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters at the Agargaon election building in the capital.
He said, “Tomorrow (Sunday) the matter will be presented in the commission meeting and as per the decision of the commission the inclusion of their names in the voter list will be finalized.”
EC Secretary said, Tariq Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman completed the registration process by submitting the voter registration form on Saturday. The Commission has jurisdiction under Section 15 of the Electoral Roll Act, 2009 to include any adult or eligible citizen as a voter.
Akhtar Ahmed also said that they are registered as voters in Ward No. 19 of Dhaka-17 Constituency. By filling ‘Form-II’ they take photograph, provide biometric and Irish information and apply for inclusion in electoral roll.
In response to the questions of the reporters about getting Tariq Rahman’s NID number, he said, “Even though the registration process is completed today, it takes some time to upload the information and verify it by combining fingerprint, signature, face and Irish. After verification, they will be given NID number. Hopefully, it will be completed by today.”
In response to the question of when the EC will take a decision on inclusion in the voter list, the EC secretary said, “Registration is an ongoing process. However, the issue of inclusion in the voter list is related to the elections on February 12. The decision in this regard will be presented to the commission tomorrow.”
He further said that the decision of the commission is taken in two ways—one through formal meetings, the other through documents. The Commission may hold a meeting or settle the matter through documents. It is the jurisdiction of the Commission.
